The Importance of Character

The Importance of Character with VAK Learning Techniques and Yoga

We’ve all heard of the importance of character education and character building right? We’ve all seen many of the so called character teaching products including hand puppets, storybooks and posters. The question is – do we really need it and does it work? The answers to these questions are not always so simple. In a recent poll, it showed the children nowadays admit to cheating, stealing and lying on a regular basis – despite the rise of character education in the schools. This is our future generation – who will be running the country and modern industry! I think this answers the first question as to the need to do character building in a new way.

As with any learning method, one must remember that different children have different learning styles – this is an important point for all teachers and parents and must be kept in mind. The best type of character building program than would focus on all the learning styles – visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Most programs at this time are only focusing on visual and auditory. By including all three of the learning styles – especially the kinesthetic one, that is usually left out, we will be including all children – especially those labeled with ADD/ADHD. So how can you implement such a program? Yoga is a wonderful tool that can teach children so many positive character skills!

Yoga is being used more and more by parents and teachers as a way to give children more physical exercise and relaxation skills. It can also be used as a tool to teach character – as with each yoga pose you focus on the good within yourself and then let it shine out into the world. Yoga is a gentle exercise that can easily be incorporated into your daily routine and will bring great benefits.

It has been said that children are not getting enough exercise. We’re living in a world where our children are exercise deprived. Being able then to provide opportunities for physical exercise coupled with character building is a perfect solution to the challenges we face providing our children with adequate resources for their success.

Character can spell the difference between a child’s future success, their outlook on life, their attitudes and fair play. All children, regardless of their learning style, should have the benefits of programs that promote self-esteem and self-love.

We truly have the power to open the doors to our children’s hearts…one pose at a time.
